Most people like to place a kitchen island as an “island” in the middle of their kitchen.

Personally, I have one counter in my kitchen which is shorter in length than the other. So I always had a space to fill in at the end of the shorter one.

While I thought about placing a beverage fridge there, I decided on a portable kitchen island to keep my options open.

I get more counter space, more storage and I can move it into the middle of my kitchen when I choose. This is an advantage of getting a rolling kitchen island.

If you’re thinking about a kitchen island it is good to know that you can also get ones with seating. Even portable ones can offer seating.  When I was choosing I was more interested in storage. If you’re after storage too, consider whether you want shelves, cabinets or drawers.

A portable kitchen island can be on feet or wheels. Obviously if you get one on feet you’ll need to lift it to move it to another spot. Most of the islands on feet are intended to be put together in your kitchen and then placed in one spot in your kitchen.

If you’re going to regularly move your island from the middle to the side of your kitchen I would suggest getting one on wheels (take a look at the next section below).

But if you choose a portable kitchen island that includes wheels you can usually choose to leave them off and just place the wooden legs directly on the kitchen floor.

Of course, it depends on the style as to whether this will suit the island. But generally, this gives you many more options because a lot of the portable varieties are only shown with the wheels attached.

So, there are two approaches you can take.

You can get a portable kitchen island that I call “portable” because it is not attached to the floor or built-in and you can take it with you or move it to another room or another house.

But this type of kitchen island can be very heavy and you certainly wouldn’t want to be moving it often.

Then, there is the true “portable” kitchen island which can be moved easily on wheels from the center of your kitchen to the side whenever you feel like it and possible several times a day. It is the portable type that is light weight and easy to move. It’s a rolling kitchen island.

Most of the kitchen islands sold without wheels are a much heavier piece of furniture. They are often more expensive than the ones with wheels but this is usually because you get a higher quality island. By paying more you get real wood and a therefore a more solid kitchen island.

This kitchen island (above) is made from solid wood with some interior pieces being non solid wood construction. It uses Asian Hardwood on the exterior. The top counter is a distressed oak finish top. The top includes a flip-up table leaf which can be used as a breakfast bar, for serving or for eating other meals.

The cabinet is painted white with raised detail cabinet doors and adjustable shelves inside. Two drawers are included above the cabinet doors. Both ends of the kitchen island features adjustable open shelves.

This portable kitchen island has a natural finish and a solid Beechwood body. The back panel and sides are thinner board.  There’s an adjustable shelf inside the cabinet doors and the handles on the doors and drawer are also made of Beechwood are are long and easy to grasp.

This large island has counter overhang on all four sides when the leaves are extended. This allows for lots of extra seating. It has two drop-down leaves, one on each end of the island.

The counter top is 42 inches square. When you lift both leaves it extends to 66 inches. This is a large island.

The overhand is about 6.5 inches. On the ends with the leaves extended it is about 13 inches for extra leg room.

There are a few different ways to tackle the smell. First of all, only use fresh fish because if it has a smell before you cook it, it’s probably gone off and it won’t be healthy.

Cooking Methods to Reduce Fish Smell

If you fry fish it is the strongest smell. If you use a lid on the frying pan it can help but other cooking methods are better at reducing the smell.

By wrapping your fish in foil or parchment and baking it in the oven you can reduce the smell in your kitchen.

Adding a marinade helps too.

However, we don’t always want to change our method of cooking. So, let’s take a look at the ways to get rid of the strongest fish smell.

Stovetop Method to Get Rid of Fish Smell

If you place an extra pot on your cooktop with water and add some vinegar it can reduce the fish smell. Personally, this is not my favorite method because then I don’t like the smell of the vinegar in my kitchen. But I mention it here because some cooks swear by it.

If you place lemon slices in water in a pot on your stovetop and bring it to a simmering heat this is quite good. You let it “cook” at the same time as you cook your fish or you can do this after you’ve finished cooking the fish. This provides a more pleasant smell.

You can also try cinnamon, ginger or cloves in the water. You can try one of these ingredients or all of them together.  It really is a personal preference as to which smell you prefer, but they all help to get rid of the fish smell.

Essential Oils to Remove Fish Smell

The next method is a stronger version of the one above. You can use citrus essential oils in the simmer water to help remove fish smell from your kitchen.

If you don’t want to have an extra pot of water cooking on your stove then you can use an aromatherapy diffuser to disperse the citrus oil.

Sweet Orange, Mandarin or Lemon essential oil work well. Personally, I prefer to use Sweet Orange for other purposes so I like to use Lemon essential oil in my kitchen. It smells fresh and clean. You can also use a combination of these citrus oils to get a fragrance you like.

Remove Fish Smell from Your Hands

If you’re making a recipe that requires you to touch the fish with your hands, you know how difficult it is to remove the smell. It can linger with you for hours afterwards.

My worst experience with fish smell on my hands was when I was piercing a fish oil capsule to add the Omega 3 to yogurt for one of my kids.

He wouldn’t eat any sort of fish and I had read that it was good to give him fish oil.

Oh, what a mistake it was getting it on my hands. I made a total mess of trying to pierce the fish oil capsule so it ended up all over me.

Luckily I used a stainless steel soap which removes bad odors. These things are wonderful.

If you don’t already have one, order one on line today. For a few dollars it’s a good item to keep in your kitchen.

Not only does stainless steel soap remove fish smell but it also works for garlic and other strong  kitchen odors on your hands.

The way to use it is to wash your hands like normal with soap and water. Then, rub your hands with the stainless steel soap as if you are washing with normal soap. It works! It seems a bit like magic, but it works.

If you don’t have a stainless steel soap and you need to remove the smell quickly, try rubbing your hands with lemons or lemon juice. It really helps to remove the smell.

Get Rid of Fish Smell on Your Clothes

Have you been cooking and discovered you’ve splashed fish oils on your clothing. Even if you’ve used an apron you don’t want it stinking of fish the next time you use it.

In the past I’ve tried to mask the smell on clothes (after they were washed) by placing lemon juice or essential oils on top of the fish spill. It didn’t work. You need to remove the fish smell thoroughly, it can’t be masked.

To remove fish smell from clothing you can machine wash the item with 1-2 cups of white vinegar and no washing powder. Use a low level warm water wash. You just need to use the vinegar to remove the smell. If it doesn’t work 100% the first time, wash it the same way a second time and you should get the results you want.

Hanging the clothing in the sun to dry also helps to remove the smell. Once the clothing is dry, the vinegar smell evaporates so you don’t need to worry about smelling like vinegar all day long.
