Best Bread Maker
We’ll start by looking at one of the highest quality bread makers available. But we’ll also take a look at other good bread machines that may offer you better value depending on what your priorities are for your bread maker.
🍞 Best Horizontal Loaf Bread Maker – Zojirushi BB-PDC20BA Home Bakery Virtuoso Plus Breadmaker
✅ Click Here for an excellent price on the Zojirushi Virtuoso Plus
This Zojirushi is a very popular bread maker for good reason. It’s high quality, the loaf of bread is longer and similar to a traditional rectangular shape of bread, and the features are superior.
This superior bread maker has dual heaters. On the top in the lid and on the base, like most bread machines. This dual heating system promotes even baking and browning.
On the Zojirushi Virtuoso Plus you also get double kneading blades. Because the bread pan is a longer shape like a normal loaf of bread there are two mixing blades. This ensures you get the bread kneaded properly.
The length of the loaf in this bread machine is 9 inches. Most of the other large bread makers can only make a loaf of 7.5 inches.
You get a large viewing window in the top of the bread maker for easy visual confirmation of what stage your bread is at. However, there is no internal light (if you want an internal light, see the Breville BBM800XL bread machine reviewed below).
This automatic bread maker bakes your 2 lb bread in as little as 2 hrs and 25 minutes. It only takes you less than 5 minutes to add the ingredients and then the machine does the rest.
If you look in the recipe book it will also show you how to make some 1.5 lb sized loaves of bread.
You can select Crust Control as light, medium or dark. With dual heaters, you get a heater in the lid of this machine as well which gives you more even baking and more control over crust shade.
Being able to make a loaf which is close to the shape of a traditional size bread means you can easily use slices in your toaster. With some other bread machines you’ll need to adapt the recipe to reduce the loaf size so it’s not too tall. The disadvantage of this is that you get a smaller loaf overall.
With the Zojirushi Virtuoso Plus you get the advantage of a rectangular shaped loaf straight out of the pan.
Is there a timer?
You also get a delay timer.
The delay can be up to 13 hours. This lets you wake up to freshly baked bread for breakfast and that’s before you’re even out of bed!
The timer on the Zojirushi has the advantage of being able to input the time you want your bread done and that’s it. You don’t need to be doing any calculations like how many hours until you want it at breakfast etc. Just put in the time you want. This really is the easiest-to-set timer on any bread maker.
This model also includes a 12-hour clock for convenience on the digital display.
The settings on the Zojirushi BB-PDC20BA Home Bakery Virtuoso Plus Breadmaker include:
- whole wheat,
- rapid whole wheat,
- gluten free,
- salt free,
- sugar free,
- rapid white,
- rapid whole wheat,
- sourdough starter,
- cake, and
- homemade (custom settings you choose).
You may think this list of settings makes the machine complicated to use, not so. This Zojirushi bread machine provides a convenient key code on the lid of the bread maker so you can key in the number easily into the digital display to choose your setting. This is quick and easy.
There’s a recipe book that comes with the bread maker and it includes recipes for Cinnamon Roll Bread, Mini White Bread, Meatloaf Miracle, Homemade Pasta, Gluten Free Dinner Bread, and more.
You’ll love using this appliance for more than just bread.
The control panel is about 20 years out of date. You have to put the code into the bread maker to choose your setting. While this does not detract from it’s functionality, it does seem a bit old fashioned.
Another disadvantage of this bread machine is the price. This really is an expensive machine. You can get good bread makers for under $100 so don’t be discouraged if you really don’t have the budget for this one.
But if you can afford it, you’ll love the superior results. You’re paying for the dual heaters and the the dual paddles and all the other features. So you’re actually getting a good product. It’s high quality and you get great bread from it.
The size of this bread maker is 18L x 10.5D x 12.88H inches. If you need to fit it under your kitchen cabinets just be aware that it’s almost 13 inches tall and you need to be able to lift the lid as well.
🍞 Best Gluten Free Bread Maker – Breville BBM800XL Custom Loaf Bread Maker
✅ For the price on this Breville Custom Loaf Maker, Click Here
This is another superior quality bread maker. The Breville BBM800XL offers loads of features but it’s a bit less expensive than the Zojirushi model reviewed above.
This Breville bread maker includes a fruit and nut dispenser. The machine will automatically dispense the fruit and nuts when needed. You can add up to 3/4 cup of fruit or nuts to the dispenser.
Another features in the Breville is the power interruption protection. If your house loses power while your bread maker is operating, it has backup power for up to 60 minutes.
The Breville also has a collapsible paddle system for the mixing blade. The collapsible kneading blade folds in before your baking function starts. This is to allow the dough to expand before baking and minimize the hole where the blade is located.
Warning about the paddle:
While the collapsible blade is great in theory, there is some controversy about it.
Some owners have found that it still leaves a large hole even though the paddle has folded down. If this is important to you, it is worth knowing about. Even though the Zojirushi doesn’t have a collapsible blade system, its 2 blades only leave very small holes in the finished loaf. Many people prefer the small holes from the 2 blades on the Zojirushi rather than the one larger hole left by the Breville.
Sometimes the Breville paddle can be harder to remove after you’ve got your loaf out. If some of the dough has stuck to the paddle when it folds down this makes it more difficult to remove. Many people just add a bit of water to the bread pan (enough to cover the paddle) and let is soak to then remove it.
One of the biggest advantages of the Breville BBM800XL is the user interface. It’s very easy to use. There are 9 custom settings to choose from on the LCD display panel.
The selection wheel on the control panel is very intuitive. And the baking options are well described on the display panel. You also get to see the icons for the loaf size and crust shade.
The Breville bread machine allows for up to 9 custom recipes to be stored in it’s memory. These custom recipes will allow you to manually set and adjust the time and temperature for the Preheat, Knead, Rise, Punch-Down, Bake and Keep Warm functions.
You also get the 13 different preset options on the Breville. You really can get the perfect loaf.
This bread maker offers the best user interface. You’ll love it.
Gluten Free Loaves
If you’re wanting a bread maker for gluten free bread then you’ll love this Breville custom bread machine.
You can choose the preset gluten free option but you can also select the size of loaf and the crust shade you want. Some other bread machines give you a gluten free option but you can’t select the crust option. With the Breville you get to select the loaf size and crust browning option on every preset setting.
This ensures that your gluten free loaf is cooked properly and you can be happy with the crust shade you prefer.
Sizes of Loaf
The Breville BBM800XL makes four different sizes of bread. You get to choose 1, 1.5, 2 or 2.5 pound loaves.
If you’re keen to make a small loaf (1 pound) then you’ll want to consider this bread maker because there aren’t many models that do this while also offering the option of a large loaf of 2.5 pounds.
This Breville bread machine has a clear window to view the dough at any stage. And it includes an interior light. This is perfect for seeing what’s going on and at what stage your bread is at.
If you like the idea of peering in to your bread maker then this really is an advantage.
On the digital display you get 13 automatic settings, 3 crust colors, and 4 loaf sizes to choose from.
The settings on the Breville include:
- whole wheat,
- gluten free,
- crusty loaf,
- yeast free,
- bake only,
The LCD display includes a progress indicator which shows you where your bread is up to.
There is a timer for up to 13 hours so you can set it for overnight and wake up to fresh bread in the morning.
You’ll need to calculate the number of hours for the timer (as opposed to using the time like on the Zojirushi bread machine).
The exterior dimensions of the BBM800XL bread machine are 16 ¼ inches long x 10 inches wide x 15 inches high.
The machine weighs 16.8 lbs.
🍞 Best Large Bread Maker – Panasonic SD-YD250 Automatic Bread Maker with Yeast Dispenser
✅ Check the current price here for the Panasonic SD-YD250
The Panasonic SD-YD250 is a large bread maker with 3 different loaf sizes up to 2.5 lbs (the small loaf is 1.5 lbs and the medium size is 2 lbs).
The bread machine includes a digital control panel with preset bread options including white, whole wheat, multigrain, French (crisp crust, open texture), pizza and a bake only option.
In addition to the bread options you get to choose from the baking options.
The baking options include:
- rapid bake,
- bake sandwich,
- bake raisin,
- dough and
- dough raisin
The bake sandwich option results in a soft crust suitable for sandwich slices. The bake raisin option gives a beeper sound to let you know when to add dried fruits such as raisins (this is to prevent the raisins being crushed during the kneading process). The dough option will prepare dough for pizzas, dinner rolls, donuts, croissants and other recipes.
You also get to select your preferred crust shade and you preferred size of loaf that you’re baking.
The control panel uses soft-touch buttons to select the settings.
Advantages of the Panasonic SD-YD250
This machine includes a yeast dispenser that automatically adds the yeast at the proper time from the unit’s lid. This gives you the convenience of never accidentally letting the yeast mix with the wrong ingredients too early.
The bread maker includes a timer so you can program it up to 13 hours in advance. Wake up to delicious fresh bread or come home from work and enjoy homemade bread with dinner.
The Panasonic bread machine offers the feature of a temperature control program that automatically optimizes the temperatures and times for each stage of the bread making process. It uses a microprocessor program to make slight adjustments as needed to ensure the bread is baked properly despite outside influences like climate and room temperature.
This Panasonic bread maker also includes power interruption protection so the baking process will resume even when there’s an interruption in poiwer for approximately 10 minutes or less.
The external dimensions of the machine are 14 W x 13.5 H x 9 D inches.
The bread maker weighs 15 lbs.
It makes a loaf 7.5 inches in length.
The Panasonic SD-YD250 does not offer a viewing window. While you may see this as a disadvantage, Panasonic actually markets it as an advantage over other bread makers.
They say that the absence of a viewing window allows a more even reflection of heat inside the unit which offers an excellent crust, good rising and even color.
If you want to make your bread fast then you may be frustrated by the Panasonic SD-YD250. This bread maker will rest the ingredients for an hour before it starts. While this gets all the ingredients to the correct temperature, it may not suit you or your lifestyle. If you need a faster bread maker, consider one of the machines above (Zojirushi or Breville).
The Panasonic does not have a jam setting to make jam in the machine.
The Panasonic SD-YD250 is a high quality machine. If you’re looking for a bread maker that will last a long time and give you good results, you’ll like it.
🍞 Best Small Bread Maker – Cuisinart CBK-110 Compact Bread Maker
✅ See here for the price on Amazon for the Cuisinart CBK-110
The Cuisinart CBK-110 bread maker is a compact machine. It will produce a vertical loaf in 3 different sizes, 1 lb, 1.5 lbs or 2 lbs.
The exterior of the Cuisinart bread maker looks good on your counter. If you’re looking for the perfect bread maker in a compact design, this is it. It includes an LCD display which shows you the countdown time, current cycle and selected options.
You get 12 preset menu options for a variety of breads.
The settings include:
- whole wheat,
- ultra-fast (this cannot be used with the gluten free recipes),
- gluten free,
- artisan dough,
- packaged mix,
- cake (use for quick breads),
This Cuisinart bread machine includes a power failure backup system. In case of any disruption to the power supply, the machine will store in memory the stage of bread making cycle and resume once the power is restored. The power backup feature will maintain memory for up to 15 minutes.
This model includes an internal light. To activate the light, press and hold the size/light button for 3 seconds (at any time) and the internal light will turn on. The light will automatically turn off after 30 seconds. If you want to turn if off manually you can press and hold the same button again.
You can pause the bread making process for up to 10 minutes at any time by pressing the start/stop button while the unit is on. Then press it again to resume the program.
There’s an audible signal of 4 sets of 5 long beeps to remind you to add any additional ingredients like fruit or nuts. The display will show “add-in” for a few minutes during the knead cycle in case you miss the initial beeps.
After the mixing/kneading is complete, the machine will give an audible signal of 10 short beeps indicating that you have the option of removing the kneading paddle. You don’t need to remove it at this stage but you can if you want to avoid the indent/hole from the paddle baking into your bread.
Because this bread machine is a compact version, the loaf bakes vertically. If you want a loaf of bread that is similar to the ones you buy at the store then you won’t be happy with this bread maker (instead try the Zojirushi bread maker above that bakes a 9 inch length of loaf).
However, a lot of people don’t mind the vertical loaf because of the advantage of the compact design overall. If you’re making a larger loaf in this machine it will obviously be taller than what’s convenient for toasters or using in sandwiches.
But you can turn the loaf sideways and cut slices along it this way. The slices are then closer to the “normal” store bought loaf you’re used to. Personally I like the slices this way because they are a more uniform size all the way along the loaf.
🍞 Best Convection Bread Maker – Cuisinart CBK-200 Convection
✅ Check the price on Amazon here for the Cuisinart CBK-200
The Cuisinart CBK-200 Convection Bread Maker includes 16 pre-programmed settings, 3 crust colors and 3 loaf sizes to choose from.
The settings include:
- rapid white,
- whole wheat,
- rapid whole wheat,
- rapid French/Italian,
- quick bread/cake,
- low carb,
- gluten free,
- dough/pizza dough,
- artisan dough,
- sweet breads,
- rapid sweet breads,
- last minute loaf,
- bake only
The loaf sizes available are 1 lb, 1.5 lbs or 2 lbs.
This Cuisinart includes a delay timer for up to 12 hours.
This Cuisinart bread maker includes a power failure backup.
If there is a disruption of power supply, the unit will store in memory the stage of bread making cycle and resume once power is restored. The power backup feature can maintain memory for power failure up to 15 minutes.
You also get a keep warm function which will activate for up to 60 minutes (depending on the setting e.g. the quick bread setting will only keep warm for 22 minutes maximum).
The convection feature circulates air for superior crust color and texture.
The convection feature uses a fan to circulate air throughout the baking cycles for better overall browning and crispier crust. But the convection feature only runs during the bake cycle and the keep warm cycle.
The Cuisinart bread machine doesn’t include a fruit and nut dispenser but it does give you an audible tone to indicate the correct time to add mix-ins if you want them. You also have the choice to deactivate the mix-in feature if you know you won’t use it for your loaf.
There is also another tone which gives you the option of removing the mixing paddle before baking (at this stage you can also remove the unbaked dough to shape it by hand if you want to).
The control panel includes an LCD display to indicate the program selections and baking cycles.
Once you start the bread making process it will show an indicator arrow on the LCD to indicate the current function, whether it’s preheat, knead, rise, bake or keep warm.
You also get a pause button on this model. You can pause the bread making for up to 15 minutes and it will then resume at the place where you paused it.
The delay timer lets you set the machine for the number of hours until you want the bread to finish baking (up to 12 hours ahead). So if you want fresh bread at 7am for breakfast you will set the timer for the number of hours ahead to 7am. The machine calculates the time it takes for the cycles to complete. You just choose the finish time.
This Cuisinart bread maker does not include an internal light. But you do get a viewing window. If you want an internal light take a look at the Breville, the compact Cuisinart or the KBS ceramic pan bread machine (which is a very impressive bread maker for a small price).
If you prefer a very light shade of crust, you may be disappointed with this bread machine. Some people have complained that on the light setting for crust shade it is still too dark. “Light” is the lowest shade and it goes up from there to medium and dark. So if you find light too strong you can’t do much about it.
Measurements for the Cuisinart CBK-200
The loaf pan measures 7 inches long x 5 1/4 inches wide.
The external dimensions of the bread maker are 17 long x 10 1/2 deep x 12 1/4 high inches.
This bread maker weighs 16 lbs.
🍞 Best Cheap Bread Maker – Sunbeam 5891 Programmable Bread Maker
✅ Check the price here for this Sunbeam bread maker
The Sunbeam 5891 is a very good bread maker at a very good price. It comes with pre-programmed settings and you have the choice to bake a loaf of 1.5 lbs or 2 lbs.
If you’re looking for bang for your buck, this bread machine offers a lot.
You get 12 bread maker settings. These include:
- whole wheat
- quick bread
- express bake 1.5
- express bake 2.0
- bake only
The color button allows you to choose between three settings for your crust shading (L-Light, P-Medium or H-Dark).
The bread maker includes an LCD digital display. It will show you the number of the bread setting, the color setting and the time remaining while your bread is kneading or baking. So, once you press the start/stop button to begin the display will show the remaining time until your bread is baked. Once done the display reads 0:00.
The Sunbeam 5891 bread machine includes a timer button to delay start for up to 13 hours.
The User Manual that comes with the bread maker will show you the times for the settings. For example, the basic setting takes 3 hours, the quick bread setting takes 1 hour and 43 minutes, the express bake for a 1.5 lb loaf is 58 minutes.
The Sunbeam includes an automatic keep warm setting that will keep your bread warm for up to one hour. But you can turn the warmer off by pressing the start/stop button and holding it until you hear a beep.
You get power outage protection on this bread machine. If the power goes out while the bread maker is operating, it is protected for up to 30 minutes so that the cycle is retained. It will resume its cycle when power is restored (within the 30 minutes).
Is there a gluten free option?
You can still make gluten free bread in this machine even though it doesn’t have a gluten free setting. If you don’t want the dough to be “punched down” which may be important for your gluten free bread to rise properly then you can use the Quick Bread setting #4 (it bakes for 1 hr 43 minutes).
One of the advantages you’ll love on this bread maker is the ExpressBake setting. You can have fresh bread in under 1 hour. The setting takes 58 minutes.
The loaf is a little more dense in texture with this setting but some people are so happy with this setting that they use it every day. It still makes a very nice loaf of bread.
The loaf will also tend to have a thicker crust than other breads (and may crack on the top) because the baking is done at higher temperatures to get it done in a shorter time. (Also you cannot use the delay timer with the ExpressBake setting because of how the ingredients are affected during the delay time.)
If you like your bread made fast, you’ll love this feature.
There is no pause button. If you press stop when making bread this will cancel the entire cycle and you will need to start from scratch.
There’s no fruit and nut dispenser and no yeast dispenser. A lot of people find a yeast dispenser a nuisance because you need to clean it, so the lack of it may not worry you.
If you like to bake a lot of fruit and nut breads you should know that there isn’t a beep to let you know when to add the mix-ins. In fact, you can’t even pause the bread making process and add them in.
If you look at the recipes that come with the bread machine they always include mix-ins like walnuts, pecans and chopped dates at the beginning (before mixing and kneading begins). While the bread maker can cope with mixing these ingredients into the dough you may not be happy with this method if you put a lot of emphasis on these types of breads.
A bread maker like the Breville BBM800XL includes a fruit and nut dispenser (but it’s a lot more expensive than the Sunbeam). The Cuisinart CBK-110 is a very affordable bread maker (under $100) which includes an audible beep to let you know when to pause the machine and add mix-ins. Another bread maker with a detachable fruit and nut dispenser is the KBS ceramic pan bread machine which is a high quality machine at an affordable price.

How big is the loaf?
But it will not give you a full size loaf of bread. The dimensions of the pan are 6 H x 7 W x 5 D inches.
You can choose to make a 1.5 lb loaf of bread or a 2 lb loaf.
The product weight is 11.9 lbs.

However, on this Hamilton Beach bread machine you do get the audible indicator for when to add in the mix-ins. This is an advantage over the Sunbeam.

Display panel on this bread machine
The display panel includes an LCD display and the buttons are touch activated (not push). The display panel lights up to see it for a while and then turns off again. To see it again just touch the minus sign (on a button below the display) and it lights back up and doesn’t interfere with the operation of the bread maker. Also, the display tells you where the bread maker is up to in the process and how much time there is until the bread is ready.
You also get an internal light on this bread machine. The viewing window is made of tempered glass and overall the bread maker looks stylish on your counter.
Is there a pause function?
This KBS bread maker includes a pause function. By pressing the start/stop/pause button and holding for 2 seconds you hear a buzzing noise and the machine will stop, you then press the same button one more time to pause the program. You can use this to add ingredients etc. You simply press the button again to take it off pause and start the program again from where it was up to.
This bread machine comes with a hook attachment. You can use it if the mixing paddle gets stuck in the bread when it is baked. You can stick the hook into the base and gently release the paddle.
On this bread maker you do have the option of removing the stirring paddle before you start the baking phase of the bread making.
This bread maker has extra functions like yogurt, sourdough, milky loaf and ferment and yet it’s still a reasonable price.
This KBS bread maker does not give you an audible alert to take the mixing paddle out before baking.
It does include a pause function, so you can take the paddle out if you want to, but you need to time it yourself and check the right stage in the process on the control panel.
